DOES SIZE MATTER!

It really depends on what your talking about now doesn't it. The size of your apiary definitely makes a difference. People hear about how the bees are dying and the massive over winter loss there was a couple years ago. If you only have two hives and you loose one that is a 50% loss and that sounds huge. I know a guy that had a 5 % loss last year and thought that doesn't sound bad. The only thing is he had 800 hives so he lost like 40 hives. Ok now that sounds worse doesn't it. Well if you look at the numbers its not because the guy with 2 hives can't split his hive in the spring ( if its healthy enough) and he can end up right back where he started with two hives. But look at the other guy. Because he still has 760 hives he can go out and actually expand his apiary to 1500 hives if he wants. So in this case size matters so if you are cruising along with 1, 2 or even 3 hives my suggestion is to go to at least 10. You will have no problem selling all the honey you make if you can't eat it yourself or friends and family appreciate it when you give them a gift of the sweet/ healthy stuff. It doesn't take a lot more time to take care of 10 then it does two or three and you can get through a rough year easier. If you only have one or two there is a chance you can loose them all which is discouraging and costly. If you have ten there is very little chance you will loose them all if you take care of them. So you can split them or take nucleus colonies out of them to bring your numbers back up to ten again with very little to no cost.

(I'm just writing this because I keep seeing the words polar vortex on the weather sites and its making me nervous)
