Test Building Looks

This is how my test building looks on the inside. Started with 40 hives inside. It has it’s own solar system with 12 volt fans that I bought off eBay running 24 hours a day to mix the air. And another fan to vent warm air out which in turn pulls cold fresh air in when it gets above 4 degrees C. I would actually like it if there were more hives in the little barn because I would like the venting fan to operate more often. As soon as it hits about -4 outside the venting fan shuts off because it drops below 4 degrees. So when it is at -15 it is around -2 in the building. When temps are low I go out and manually run the venting fan for a little while to exchange the air in the building. There are dead bees on the floor because if you look at the hives I have outside there are dead bees in the snow so the same thing is occurring indoors. So I vacuum them up and dump them outside in the snow. The dead bees you see in the picture is from 3 weeks in the barn with 40 hives so I don’t think that is to bad. If it works out ok I will have a much better insulated building for next year and will have more hives in a smaller area. All but a couple of these hives have wide open screen bottom boards. And all have insulated inner cover with small vent hole. So far I don’t see much difference from wintering outside because I checked two yards yesterday outside that added up to 43 hives and they were all alive. Spring will tell the whole story.
